Market Intelligence Reports

Control Design survey its readers to gather market intelligence about a variety of subjects that are of interest to controls engineers, machine builders and machine designers. Here are the video reports.

MIR Vision & Sensors Market Intelligence Report: Sensors & Vision
December 15, 2009
Control Design's Managing Editor Mike Bacidore and Rixan Associates' Director of Egineering, Mark Battisti, go over Control Design's results of its latest survey on machine sensors and vision systems. The survey asked its participants about the type of sensing they currently used in their machines including vision systems, how end-users are connecting to I/O, what they use machine vision for and whether wireless sensing is a viable option. Watch this video report to learn about the results of this survey.
MIR Drives and Motors Market Intelligence Report: Drives & Motors
October 26, 2009
Control Design surveyed its audience to get a snapshot of the types of drive technologies currently being used on their machines, including servo drives, stepper motors and supporting components and software. Kevin Pauley, control systems engineer at Wrapade, joins Control Design's executive editor Jim Montague to analyze the survey responses from a machine-builder perspective.
Discrete Automation Controllers Market Intelligence Report: Discrete Automation Controllers
September 14, 2009
Machine builders and machine users don't have time to waste. The builders must construct equipment to meet precise specifications and provide specific and often unique capabilities, and they usually have to do it on very tight schedules. When it comes to the choice of machine controller, most builders and end users specify only the features they find absolutely necessary, while keeping in mind scalability for future needs. ControlDesign.com polled its machine automation professionals on their controller preferences and here is what they have to say.
I/O Systems Market Intelligence Report: I/O Systems
August 25, 2009
Jeff Hanna, manager of control product development at Intelligrated, and Lee Hilpert, president of HilTech, share their wisdom and opinions on the results of a recent Industrial Networking survey on how industrial users employ I/O points, modules and related devices. We asked readers to choose their preferences on a number of topics—centralized vs. distributed; hardwired vs. fieldbus; reliability vs. compatibility; PLCs vs. PCs—and discovered a surprising rank and file on either side.
Operator Interface Market Intelligence Report: HMI/Operator Interface
August 17, 2009
Control Design recently surveyed its readers to learn which interface features are all the rage with controls engineers. We asked about the hardware they prefer, how big screen sizes should be, the software they’re using to develop display code and whether Web browsers should be included in the HMI. Rob Bouws, product development engineer at Extol, comments on the research results and provides some interesting insights..
MIR: Circuit Protection Market Intelligence Report: Circuit Protection
August 6, 2009
Walt Boyes explains the implications of the responses received from CONTROL's 2009 survey on circuit protection. What factors determine the kind of circuit protection you use? Watch this video and get the entire report. Find out the circuit-protection procedures and practices of our audience.
MIR: Programmable Controller Platform Market Intelligence Report: Programmable Controller Platforms
June 12, 2009
Control Design recently surveyed its readers to learn which programmable controller platforms they're using. We asked about the controls they prefer, whether they've switched recently, the scan times they need and the programming languages they use. John Lewis, vice president of engineering and construction at Fulghum Industries, joins us to add his insightful comments to the research results.
MIR: Safety and Control System Integration Market Intelligence Report: Safety and Control System Integration
May 22, 2009
To learn how engineers, machine builders and system integrators are integrating safety and control systems, Control Design polled its readers. We gathered and analyzed answers from more than 130 respondents. Many use programmable machine controls but still default to hardwired safety systems. Participants agree that initially higher costs of integrating control and safety are offset by reduced downtime in the future, but that customer resistance and other obstacles still hinder integrating them.
MIR: Power Supplies Market Intelligence Report: Power Supplies & Circuit Protection (2009)
April 23, 2009
Control Design recently surveyed its readers to learn about the power supplies and circuit protections now delivering the juice to their applications and production processes. We asked about their power protection policies, as well as use of surge protection devices, uninterruptible power supplies or UPSs, overload or short-circuit protection, and circuit breakers. Jack Chopper, chief electrical engineer at Filamatic, join us to interpret those answers from a machine-builder perspective.
MIR: Motion Control Market Intelligence Report: Motion Control
February 10, 2009
Michael Reuster, chief engineer, software engineering, at Trumpf, gives a machine builder's interpretation of the results from our reader survey on how controls engineers handle motion control.
MIR: Vision & Sensors Market Intelligence Report: Sensors & Vision
December 18, 2008
System Integrator Ned Lecky of Lecky Integration gives focus and clarity to the results of our reader survey on the use of sensors and vision systems.
MIR: Machine Safety Market Intelligence Report: Who’s Responsible for Machine Safety?
October 23, 2008
Scott Dibben, senior controls design engineer at Missouri Tooling & Automation, comments on the results of Control Design's reader survey on machine safety, giving a hands-on explanation of who's responsible for it and where to get the regulation information you need.
MIR: Industrial Ethernet Market Intelligence Report: Industrial Ethernet
August 25, 2008
Take a tour of the National Art Institute and discover some interesting reader-survey data that sheds light on the use of industrial Ethernet by manufacturing plants.
MIR: Electromechanical Components Market Intelligence Report: Electromechanical Components
August 25, 2008
Controls Engineer Brian Thomas of Modern Process Equipment offers some real-world insight into the results of our reader survey on the use of electromechanical components.
MIR: Design & Simulation Market Intelligence Report: Design & Simulation Software
June 26, 2008
