As Control Design celebrates its 15th anniversary, each month we bring you a look back at some of the events and developments that shaped technology during that time. In May, Daimler-Benz bought Chrysler, the first horse was cloned, and Microsoft purchased Skype.

May 11, 1997: A computer beat a world-champion chess player for the first time when IBM's Deep Blue beat Garry Kasparov in a multi-game match.

May 7, 1998: The largest industrial merger on record took place when Daimler-Benz bought Chrysler for close to $40 billion.

May 28, 1998: Susan Terebey discovered a planet outside our solar system with the use of photos taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

May 1, 1999: A group of U.S. mountain climbers discovered the body of George Mallory on Mount Everest. Mallory had died in June 1924 while trying to become the first person to reach Everest's summit.

May 6, 2002: "Spider-Man" became the first movie to make more than $100 million in its first weekend.

May 4, 2003: Idaho Gem, the first horse to be cloned, was born.
