SunSpec Enlists Moxa Solar Array for Application Showcase

Nov. 7, 2012
35,000 ft² Solar PV Array to Help Promote Communication Standards for Solar Industry

Moxa recently launched one of the largest solar developments in Orange County, Calif. that will be used to promote communication standards for the solar industry.

The 35,000 ft² 311 kW dc solar photovoltaic (PV) array was developed for use in SunSpec Alliance's upcoming Plug Fest and Application Showcase on Nov. 14 and 15. During the showcase, SunSpec members will demonstrate how SunSpec-compliant hardware works with Moxa's system to monitor power output from different applications and suppliers.

"As one of the founding sponsors and members of the SunSpec alliance, we are happy to contribute to the effort to drive greater standardization and interoperability between solar PV providers," said Eddie Lee, director of marketing at Moxa. "Moxa is in a unique position to support the SunSpec alliance mission as both an alliance member and the owner of a working solar PV array. We have experienced firsthand how challenging it is to work with specialized technology with no clear industry standard."

The showcase is geared towards industry professionals who contribute to the day-to-day maintenance and operations of solar PV plants, and IT professionals that participate in sustainable energy operations or use Smart Grid technology. Attendees will have the opportunity to view on-table displays and live demos of operational solar PV power plants, review information technology standards in renewable generation markets, and sit-in on a panel discussion with experts on how multi-vendor interoperability is being achieved now in solar PV and what it means for the industry, according to Moxa.

"Our events in Boston earlier this year were extremely successful at demonstrating the value of SunSpec alliance open standards, multi-vendor interoperability of PV system components, and the operational continuity that solar asset owners seek," said Tom Tansy, chairman of the SunSpec. "Thanks to Moxa's team and the unprecedented level of access that they have granted, we are developing their solar array to be one of the core sites for SunSpec interoperability testing and demonstration going forward, and we are excited to work with them for the upcoming showcase."
