Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America is working in combined efforts with mathematical and analytical software provider Maplesoft on a new project that aims to shorten Toyota's development time while maintaining product quality.

The research-based Symbolic Control project will use Maplesoft's symbolic computation methods in robust control design. The goal of the project is for Toyota to be able to implement the symbolic design and analysis methods for linear, nonlinear and parametric robust control, and allow developers to consider system nonlinearities, modeling inaccuracies and parametric uncertainties in the design process, according to Maplesoft.

The companies worked together on a prior research-based Model Simplification project that lead to Toyota implementing Maplesoft's methods for model simplification and preprocessing of high-level acausal dynamical models. As a result, Toyota saw faster process execution, better analysis, higher efficient and more accurate simulation.

The Symbolic Control project will use the same foundation for research analyzing, designing and simplifying controller models used in the Model Simplification project.

The research process and results of the projects have been on display at several conferences and has three patent applications underway.
