Ensuring operator safety in HMI environments

Dec. 20, 2005
This paper explains the concept of emergency stop switches and introduces a new design of next-generation switches that allows an operator to work in a safer HMI environment.
From IDEC Corp.FOR AN operator faced with an emergency situation, using emergency stop switches is the last possible measure to avoid accidents. Development of a new emergency stop switch helps assure an operator's safety against foreseeable failure. Emergency stop switches must send a stop command to machines and systems without failure. Many international standards have been written to ensure emergency stop switches meet both functional and structural requirements. It has been discovered, however, that the structure of conventional emergency stop switches cannot shut down system operations when improperly installed or operated with an excessive amount of force.
