In the beginning, machine and robot builder OEMs developing an automation system had the choice of relay ladder logic for PLCs, and assembly language for single-board computers and minicomputers. Automation hardware and software have come a long way since then, but so have machine and robot applications.

The murmur about whether a manufacturing job skills gaps exists because salaries and wages in those skills areas actually are too low to attract interest, continues to show up. It seems to have moved from a low grumble to an audible growl.
We continue to hear more about the "re-shoring" of American manufacturing. Apparently, U.S. manufacturers are finding more reasons to bring production back home. Raj Batra, president of Siemens Industry's Industry Automation division, and Helmuth Ludwig, CEO of Siemens Industry, both talked about it during the company's latest Automation Summit last month.
