Japanese engineers unveil a scorpion-like robot designed to explore the disaster-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
Toshiba Corporation engineers have unveiled a new scorpion-like robot designed to explore the inside of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, the site of an infamous 2011 disaster.

Developed in conjunction with the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID), the robot will be used specifically to investigate the interior of the primary containment vessel (PCV) of Unit 2 of the plant. This area is thought to have suffered extreme damage after a hydrogen explosion during the initial crisis.

Equipped with two cameras, LED lights, a radiation dosimeter and a thermometer, and remotely operated by a wired cable, the robot will illuminate its surroundings and allow operators to view the interior of the facility.
