We’re trying to save cabinet space by changing from a linear regulated power supply to a switched mode power supply. From what I understand, we’ll get a higher power density with a smaller footprint, while the power factor is about the same. My biggest concern is, with so many devices offering built-in intelligence these days, will a switching power supply create so much electromagnetic interference that it will cause a controls problem on our form, fill and seal machines?

Absolute Machine Tools, Inc. has reached an agreement to acquire Chicago-based distributor Machine Tool Technology – 21, Inc. (MTT-21) into its operations. MTT-21 distributes CNC machine tools, such as Kitamura.
“This acquisition combines the global resources of our company with the capabilities and excellent local reputation of MTT-21," said Steve Ortner, Absolute president. "It is evidence of Absolute Machine Tools’ dedication to Illinois and Wisconsin manufacturers, and also confirms the company’s strength in a down market.”

Intertek has partnered with Pepperl+Fuchs to pilot its ETL Hazardous Locations Panel Program, marking the first complete project under Intertek’s new hazardous areas panel shop certification offering.
According to Intertek, the Hazardous Locations Panel Program provides an alternative approach to certification for manufacturers who custom-build or mass-produce industrial control panels, which are subject to extensive and stringent conformity assessment requirements. Under the program, which includes on-site training, quarterly inspections and annual auditing, manufacturers can produce custom control panels and conduct their own testing under Intertek’s SATELLITE Data Acceptance Program to certify products under the ETL mark.

The PLCopen Coding Guidelines version 1.0 ─ as part of PLCopen's Software Construction Guidelines initiative ─ have been released to the public and are available on the association's website for downloading.

A Control Design reader writes: I have a problem, and it may be the stack lights. I'm designing the control system for a large multi-station assembly line in an automotive application. In previous projects, I mounted stack lights and alarm annunciation directly to the main control enclosures and connected digital I/O. Unfortunately, this wasn’t always the best location, and the devices were poorly sealed.
What are some better options for mounting, operating and acknowledging system status and signaling devices? The stack lights will need up to five colors and need to include an audible alarm.
