One of our Putman editors sent this to the rest of us, in response to a report bemoaning that the U.K.'s Queen's English Society formed 40 years ago to protect language against poor spelling and grammar, is closing up shop because too few people care, claiming there is not enough interest in its work in the tweet and txt msg age.
Another Putmanite added this, variously attributed to Thomas Jefferson and others: "I have nothing but contempt for anyone who can spell a word only one way."
