GKN Aerospace Research Finds Strategic Choices Related to Tools, Coolant, Programming and Parameters Can All Combine to Reduce Energy Levels by 73%
GKN Aerospace recently partnered with the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining as part of the U.S. Air Force's sustainable manufacturing initiative to measure and test energy consumption in CNC machining. Researchers found there was a large margin for energy savings, so GKN's aircraft component production plant applied one of its flexible machining cells to this project to find out how much energy could be saved in aircraft part machining. In this article, Peter Zelinski, senior editor for Modern Machine Shop, summarizes what they learned, including findings from the study that the plant has already started to apply in production.
