Many leading mobile operators have contributed a large amount of their company's resources toward best practices in machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, but are still finding it difficult to give their full attention to new opportunities arising daily.

In a recent report from Frost & Sullivan, "Efforts of Independent M2M Service Providers and M2M MVNOs" was recognized as a main contributor to the North American M2M communications market.

For example, large mobile operators are not putting little focus on small-to-mid sized business (SMB) customers, which is why M2M mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) have increased their participation in remote connectivity services to the SMB segment.

It is not being suggested that M2M MVNOs are only working with smaller groups. Several M2M MVNOs are becoming more successful as preferred connectivity providers in greater business sectors.

Provider Aeris Communications (Aeris) determined the following key success factors for leading M2M providers:

  • Adopt a "Solutions Provider" approach instead of a "Services Provider" approach
  • Purpose Built Network
  • Flexibility and Ease of Implementation
  • Putting it all Together (Formula for Success)
