Five Day Interactive Workshop Focuses on Best Practices for Teaching Energy, Sustainability and Environmental Concepts
Seventy middle school teachers from 10 countries have received scholarships from Honeywell to attend its five day interactive workshop June 24-28 in San Diego, Calif. at the SDG&E Energy Innovation Center. The Green Boot Camp welcomes teachers from the U.S., Australia, Canada, China, England, Hungary, India, Mexico, Nigeria and Scotland to focus on best practices for teaching energy, sustainability and environmental concepts. Since the camp was founded in 2009, 140 teachers have attended, providing perspectives on sustainability challenges and discussing available opportunities in their regions. "Energy, water, air quality and habitat conservation and restoration are among the most important issues facing our global community," said Paul Orzeske , president of Honeywell Building Solutions, the company's corporate citizenship initiative. "Green Boot Camp enables us to work closely with teachers to give them the tools to help ensure future generations understand the importance of sustainable energy practices."The week long event has hands-on workshops where teachers can build rain barrels and wind turbines, and gain information on energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies and calculating greenhouse gas emissions to enhance their curricula, according to Honeywell. Teachers can also attend a guided tour of Balboa Park to see first hand how the park is using sustainability best practices to improve facility management and learn how LEED processes are helping the park prepare for its 2015 Centennial celebration."SDG&E is proud to work with Honeywell Green Boot Camp again and open our Energy Innovation Center facility for teachers to refine their sustainability curriculum," said Ted Reguly, director of customer programs and assistance at SDG&E. "SDG&E has been recognized on a national level for our leadership in high-impact energy efficiency and carbon-reduction initiatives, and we share Honeywell's enthusiasm for inspiring green ideas and teaching sustainability."
