A3 updates ISO 10218 standards

April 2, 2025
The new classification system for robots offers better-defined safety benchmarks than its predecessor

Jonathan B. Johnson talked to Automation World, a Control Design partner publication, about the revised ISO 10218 standards for industrial robot safety in a recent interview. These updates, published by the Association for Advancing Automation (A3), provide clearer functional safety requirements, making compliance more straightforward.

The revisions integrate previously separate guidelines, such as those for collaborative robots (ISO/TS 15066) and manual load/unload procedures, into a more comprehensive framework. This consolidation simplifies implementation and ensures that machine builders can more effectively design systems that meet international safety regulations, including those adopted by ANSI, CSA and the EU Machinery Directive.

A key highlight of the 2025 edition is the inclusion of cybersecurity requirements, which are increasingly critical as industrial automation systems become more interconnected. To learn more, read the full interview with Johnson in this article from Automation World.
