Mersen and Northeastern University in Boston have formed a joint partnership that aims to study the translation of smart fault detection methods for photovoltaic (PV) installations. The findings will narrow the technology gap by helping to identify and protect against dangerous electrical faults in solar PV installations, according to Mersen.

The team's research in the development of these smart power protection devices would not be possible without a grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This is the second sponsorship the team has received from NSF in support of the partnership.

Professor Brad Lehman, PhD., E.E. of Northeastern University, Jean François de Palma, PhD, vice president of Mersen, and Roy Ball, MBA and vice president of research and design for Mersen are overseeing the project. Northeastern University graduate student Ye Zhao is leading the project that is expected to last 18 months. Zhao is authoring a technical paper about the research and its findings that he will discuss at the upcoming ECCE Conference in September.
