Shielded Cables, Properly Grounded, Eliminate EMI and Protect Your Equipment

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are vital for modern motor control, but the cable between the drive and motor can make or break system performance. Southwire conducted rigorous testing to quantify the impact of cable type and termination on system reliability, EMI, and current behavior.

This new study, completed in 2025 and presented at the IEEE PCIC conference, answers commonly asked questions about VFD installations, notably how different cable constructions and termination methods influence overall system performance. By comparing multiple industry cable designs under controlled conditions, the research provides actionable insights for reducing EMI, improving reliability, and protecting equipment. The findings serve as a practical guide for end-users, machine builders, and installers, while also supporting future industry standardization. To ensure accuracy, tests were conducted only on continuous cable runs—no intermediate devices such as reactors, filters, or disconnects were included.
