The Right Connections for Your Network

May 16, 2013
You Have Lots of Things to Worry About, but the Physical Connection of Your Cabling Shouldn't Be One of Them. There's a Lot to Choose From.

The method for the physical connection of signal wires and cables often depends on the location of the I/O in the application. In a recent poll of sibling Control Design's machine builder audience, we learned that more than half (57%) of the respondents are nearly all centralized and rack-mounted. That corresponds pretty well to the 72% who indicated that the I/O is cabinet-mounted, and, by implication, reasonably protected.

But even in well-protected environments, the use of molded or assembled cordsets is a growing choice for that physical connection in place of traditional screw or spring-clamp terminations. It's sometimes a question of the tradeoff of initial cost versus installation labor savings.

"Assembled cordsets are a common connectivity solution, however, in-the-field assembly makes them vulnerable to performance deficiencies, such as mis-wiring and moisture ingress, which can impact the operation of the entire application," says Jay Bartsias, connectivity product manager, Turck. "So, cordsets have progressed to include overmolded options. Overmolding can improve the durability of the cordset, as well as reduce the total cost of ownership by improving uptime, decreasing labor and maintenance, and improving overall performance for enhanced application accuracy and efficiency."

Make a Change
Serial to fiberoptic Ethernet converters integrate serial port devices into industrial Ethernet networks for transmission over longer distances. They provide conversions from RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 into fiberoptic signals in both SC and ST fiber connection options, and have automatic baud rate recognition. If the baud rate changes, the signals are still routed without any data loss.

Don't Blow It
811 Series Class CC and Midget-style fuse holders are lever-actuated, and terminate with Cage Clamp spring pressure. For conductors 14–6 AWG, they have one to three poles; an optional coupling kit creates multi-pole configurations in the field. They support branch-circuit applications with up to 200 kA SCCR (30 A, 600 V). The Midget-style variant achieves 100 kA SCCR (30 A, 750 Vac/1,000 Vdc) for supplemental protection.
