Keep up with power supplies

Jan. 20, 2014
As machine control systems become more sophisticated, power supplies can't let them down.

Machine builders always look to add value to their products and differentiate them from their competition. Better performing, more-efficient power supplies are on the list of components that these builders expect to help them add some of that value.

"To meet such challenges, power supply manufacturers continue to develop power systems that result in a practical system availability factor of 1 (always up)," says Paul O'Boyle, senior project engineer, Kepco.

"This means builders can offer customers enhanced reliability systems that will not go down because of single failures in the power system. Also, maintenance of the power system can be performed without having to bring down the process. Hot-swappable, redundant modules are building blocks that can be configurable to meet a wide variety of system requirements. Newer devices also offer the opportunity for system upgrades and mid-life enhancements of legacy equipment without the need for costly and time-consuming rewiring.

O'Boyle says another trend is plug-and-play power systems. "These customized power solutions let the machine builder focus on its core competencies and rapidly install preconfigured systems."

As factory and machine controls become more computerized and automated, power supply designs are being driven to incorporate digital communication capabilities, adds Alex Karapetian, director of sales and marketing for Acopian Power Supplies, noting several other trends that drive improvements in power supply performance. "Trends in clean water technology and water purification drive the development of larger, current-regulated power supplies with reversible output polarities," he says. "Cathodic/anodic protection technology drives the development of larger, current-regulated power supplies with remote programming capability; LED technology is driving the development of smaller, current-regulated power supplies; and solar power technology drives development of higher-power dc-dc converters and dc-dc converters with wider input ranges."
