When designing a vision system for industrial automation, controls engineers must consider several key factors to ensure successful implementation.
Eric Hershberger, a principal applications engineer at Cognex, and David L. Dechow, owner and consultant at Machine Vision Source, spoke with Machine Design on how to use image sensors, cameras, light sources, computers and software for defect detection, measurement, assembly verification, robot guidance and code reading.
Hershberger emphasizes the importance of integrating vision systems into the design process early on rather than as an afterthought. Proper placement of cameras and lighting is crucial to obtaining the best image quality, which is essential for accurate inspections. He also highlights the need to account for environmental factors, such as ambient light, that can interfere with vision systems.
Dechow adds that the starting point for any machine vision project should be a clear understanding of the application's value-adding goals, rather than focusing on the technology itself. Customers should define what they need to achieve in their process, such as ensuring parts are free of defects before progressing through production. Only then should they explore how machine vision can meet those needs.
