The Electric Power Research Institute (www.efficientpowersupplies.org) says nearly 2.5 billion electrical products containing power supplies currently are used in the U.S., and about 400–500
million new power supplies (linear and switching) are sold in the U.S. each year. The total amount of electricity these power supplies consume is more than 207 billion kWh/year, or about 6% of the national electric bill.
“More efficient designs could save an 15-20% of that energy,” reports EPRI. “Savings of 32 billion kWh/yr would cut the annual national energy bill by $2.5 billion, displace the power output of seven large power plants and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 24 million tons/yr.”
According to a report from Electronics.ca Publications (www.electronics.ca), “2007 saw double-digit revenue growth in the power supply market, which was estimated at $17.1 billion.”
There is work to be done in all aspects of energy costs in the U.S., and power supplies are part of that process. Suppliers must continue to respond to market needs for energy-efficient technologies and processes
in all sectors.
Step power supplies for small loads have a voltage versus current characteristic output. For heavy demands, it provides constant current output for starting lamp loads or capacitive loads. Some modules have adjustable output voltages, allowing for lead length compensation. The unit can be mounted on a rail or in a panel.
Model 859-801 24 Vdc/5 Vdc step-down converter produces 5 Vdc at up to 500 mA from a 24 Vdc source. Measuring 7mm with end plate, the DIN-rail mount converter is a drop-in for space-constricted applications.

Phaseo switch-mode power supplies are designed for 24 Vdc output of 0.3–40 A. In addition to 100–120 Vac input, the single-phase units can accept up to 200–500 Vac input.
S8VS switching power supplies have built-in diagnostic displays to support preventive maintenance and troubleshooting inside the control panel, providing status of output voltage, output current and peal hold current. The single-phase, single-output AC-to-DC units are available with display on models ranging 60–480 W.
SDN-P power supplies in 12 and 48 Vdc outputs offer sag immunity, transient suppression and noise tolerance. Three models were designed for power factor correction to meet European directives. SCP-X units are sealed in a metal case to eliminate a separate enclosure and can be mounted virtually anywhere on a machine.
The 300 W EFE-300W and 400 W EFE-400 single output supplies deliver 133% peak power capability for 10 sec with efficiencies of 90%. The power supplies use an eight-bit microcontroller for full digital control of the output. Power densities to 22 W/in³ are achieved at peak load conditions and 16.6 W/in³ at continuous loading.
WL9 low-profile switching power supplies are available in outputs to 135 Vdc with an output power rating of 720 W. Some have slot output voltage ranges ±1 Vdc from the nominal; others have adjustment ranges 0–5 Vdc to 0–135 Vdc. All models can provide constant voltage or constant current.
ML 100.200 converts AC voltage of a typical three-phase system into regulated DC voltage. It requires two legs of the three-wire system, making it suited for when a control power transformer is changed out for a power supply. It is rated for 4.2 A at 24 Vdc (100 W).
Diagnostic power conditioner (DPC) for Foundation fieldbus has an integrated diagnostics module that provides statistics to help diagnose problems associated with the fieldbus physical layer. It can aid in commissioning and maintenance of the fieldbus system.
TEP-100 isolated DC/DC converter modules are used where PCB mounting is not an option. It has a metal enclosure with four M3 inserts for attaching to a chassis or heat sink. Twelve models offer 100 W output with input ranges 18–36 Vdc or 36–75 Vdc and outputs 5–48 Vdc to 3–48 Vdc.
PS5R-SB 10 W and 15 W Slim Line power supplies range 10–240 W, available in 5 V/10 W and 12 V/15 W or 24 V/15 W. They are UL 508 listed, designed for hazardous locations and are NEC Class 2-rated.
RNB130 primary switched-mode power supply comes in a 35-mm-wide DIN-rail-mount housing per IEC 60715. It can be connected to mono-phased AC networks or to two-phase conductors of three-phase supply networks (TN, TT or IT networks as per VDE 0100 T 300/IEC 364-3) with 100–240 Vac nominal voltage.
ESX10-T electronic circuit protector has electronic trip characteristics and active current limitation to allow selective disconnect of loads wired to 24 Vdc power supplies. It limits the highest current to 1.3–1.8 times the rated capacity, making it possible to switch on capacitive loads up to 20,000 microfarads. Failure and status indication are provided by a multicolor LED and status output signal.
E-T-A Circuit Breakers
FieldConnex fieldbus power hub (FPH) modular power supply for Foundation fieldbus (FF-H1) provides multiple power supplies for fieldbus devices. Fieldbus segment connections can be integrated with appropriate terminators and host-specific system plug connectors. The hub follows the passive design of powering the fieldbus network, while providing redundant galvanic isolation and host spur protection.
1609 UPS line can power control panel and programmable controller devices to bridge a short-term outage or provide backup power to allow devices to save needed data and shut down safely. The units can deliver 500 VA for nine minutes and can be DIN-rail mounted inside a control panel. The UPS is equipped for remote monitoring.
SPD series includes a 480 W, three-phase switching power supply available in 24 and 48 Vdc output voltages, universal input voltages of 340–575 Vac and 480–820 Vdc and has power factor correction and parallel functions. The DIN-rail power supply has short circuit, overvoltage and overload protection, power-OK and low-output-voltage diagnostic LEDs and a relay output for a power-ready signal.
HSF series of hot-swappable plug-in power supplies (50–1,500 W) are designed to be combined with an N+1 faulttolerant power system. Built-in forced current sharing and OR-ing diodes are provided. It can be used independently as a multi-output power supply.
General-purpose, switchmode power supply is threephase 120 W and has adjustable output voltage, LED operation display, automatic restart with output power overload and internal surge protection. The DIN-rail mountable housing has CE and cULus 508 approvals.
Eco-Rail multi-functional power supply has a slim metal housing and IP20 pluggable screw terminals. Available 1.3–10 A, it has adjustable voltage input, and output voltage adjustable 23 –28 V.
Quad Output DC power supply has two 0–30 V/0-5 A outputs with selectable constant voltage and current modes. Two auxillary outputs with fixed current of 3-6.5 V/3 A and 8-15 V/1 A are provided. It has short circuit protection, a power cord and four pairs of test leads.
The b maXX 4100 regenerative controllers can be used for power ratings 35–180 kW. For machines running in reversing duty, where sudden acceleration followed by deceleration is typical, the units feed the energy generated back into the system while the controllers compensate the prevailing energy losses, which are relatively insignificant. The b maXX converters supply power to one or a number of power modules and feed brake energy back into the system.
Two DIN-rail-mount power supply control modules enable parallel/redundant operation and battery backup/UPS to a power products ranging 20–960 W in industrial electrical enclosures.

Model 9135 5 kVa and 6 kVa UPS meet the demands for mission-critical computer networks in medium-density power centers and come in a 3U (5.14-inch) enclosure. Models operate at 97% efficiency in high efficiency mode and up to 91% in double conversion.
