Allied Electronics is sponsoring the team from Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, Colorado, in the 2018 NASA Robotic Mining Competition (RMC).

Vice president of eCommerce and marketing Dan Stewart and director of brand and supplier marketing Elisa Weber traveled to Fort Collins to deliver RS Pro, and other products distributed by Allied, for use in the competition.

“The students were excited to see equipment that will help create a prototype to the competition’s specs,” said Stewart. “These products will help students design and build an innovative excavation system to provide solutions to lack of power supply and retrieval of another planet’s resources in major space travel.”

Jianguo Zhao, CSU assistant professor and lead for NASA RMC, is helping the students navigate this year’s competition.

“As a student in China, I developed an interest in robotics competitions after my introduction to the field of robotics,” said Zhao. “With the support from Allied Electronics, these students may be profoundly impacted, as well.”

The CSU team is comprised of students currently enrolled in the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering. More than 50 teams from the U.S. are entered into the competition, which is in its ninth year. Winners will be announced next May at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
