In September, four tourists paid $32,500 to be taken by submarine to view the Titanic wreckage, Keegan Reilly became the first American paraplegic climber to reach the top of Mount Fuji, and about 3,000 people died in the 9/11 attack on the U.S.
Sept. 18, 1997: Coopers & Lybrand and Price Waterhouse agreed to merge, creating the world's largest accounting firm.
Sept. 9, 1998: Four tourists who paid $32,500 each were taken in a submarine to view the wreckage of the Titanic, two miles down in the Atlantic off Newfoundland.
Sept. 30, 1999: In Tokaimura, Japan, radiation escaped a nuclear facility after workers accidentally set off an uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction.
Sept. 11, 2001: Terrorists hijacked and crashed four airliners into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a field in Pennsylvania, killing about 3,000 people.
