How CSIA best practices are evolving for AI, cloud and cybersecurity

What artificial intelligence and connected architectures mean for system-integration standards

Key Highlights

  • CSIA updates its best practices after emerging technologies have matured enough to establish approaches proven in real-world applications.
  • Cybersecurity is becoming a larger component of integration best practices as control architectures become increasingly connected.
  • Frameworks such as IEC 62443 and NIST are increasingly relevant to how integrators manage cybersecurity risk and project delivery.

Artificial intelligence, cloud-connected control architectures and new cybersecurity requirements are changing how system integrators execute projects and manage risk. Adrienne Meyer, CEO of the Control System Integrators Association (CSIA), explains how the organization's best practices and certification program continue to evolve as these technologies mature.

Rather than attempting to establish practices around every new technology immediately, CSIA allows innovation to occur in the marketplace and then identifies approaches that have demonstrated value in real applications. As technologies mature and adoption increases, the organization considers their effects on project execution, risk management and business operations.

Cybersecurity is receiving particular attention. Meyer says Version 7 of CSIA's Best Practices is planned to contain significantly expanded guidance addressing cybersecurity risk, governance and operational requirements, including considerations for connected systems and cloud technologies. She also references IEC 62443 and NIST frameworks as examples of cybersecurity requirements integrators increasingly need to understand.
