Pepperl+Fuchs acquires German-based Omnitron

Pepperl+Fuchs of Twinsburg, Ohio, has acquired Omnitron, a German-based supplier of Data Matrix 2D optical coding readers for product identification or online data recording.  Data Matrix is an internationally standardized code symbology expected to replace many older codes, while extending the reach of identification systems into many new applications.

“The acquisition of Omnitron strengthens our offering of identification solutions, adding a strategic and very flexible component to our extensive family of product ID and other factory automation systems and components,” said Helge Hornis, Ph.D., manager of Pepperl+Fuchs’ Intelligent Systems Group.

Several factors are driving the active adoption of Data Matrix identification technology:

  • The amount of data that needs to be stored will increase significantly over time
  • The area available to store information on products requiring tracking and identification will decrease, requiring greater data density
  • The significance of reliable identification will increase in importance
  • The demand for a reduction in labeling costs
