After more than two decades working with industrial networking standards at the Open DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA), Adrienne Meyer, CEO of the Control System Integrators Association (CSIA), sees a direct connection between the growth of technologies such as EtherNet/IP and the challenge that system integrators face when scaling their businesses. Meyer explains that successful growth depends less on technology itself than on developing frameworks that allow people and organizations to solve problems and produce consistent results.
Meyer points to standards, collaboration and conformance as factors that helped industrial Ethernet technologies move from emerging concepts to widely adopted standards. She applies the same principles to integration companies confronting digital transformation, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and workforce shortages. Rather than simply adding engineers, growing integrators need repeatable engineering processes, documented best practices and quality systems.
CSIA's Best Practices and Benchmarks manual and certification program provide an operating framework intended to reduce variability and improve project execution. Meyer also emphasizes peer collaboration: Integrators can learn proven approaches from one another instead of independently reinventing business and engineering processes. Ultimately, she says, scaling depends on consistency, collaboration and demonstrating measurable business value to customers.
