Cybersecurity and interoperability give integrators reasons to collaborate

How competing system integrators can solve industry-wide problems together

Key Highlights

  • Competing integration firms can collaborate effectively when discussions begin with shared industry problems rather than predetermined solutions.
  • Cybersecurity, interoperability and workforce development are examples of challenges that benefit from industry-wide collaboration.
  • Diverse engineering and business perspectives can improve solutions when participants have a trusted framework for working together.

System integrators compete vigorously for projects, yet they face many of the same industry-wide challenges. Control System Integrators Association (CSIA) CEO Adrienne Meyer explains how competing companies can collaborate on problems such as talent development, cybersecurity and interoperability without eliminating the competition that drives their businesses.

The key, Meyer says, is beginning with the common problem rather than arriving with a predetermined solution. Association leadership relies on influence and consensus rather than authority, making listening, finding common ground and building trust essential. Participants need an environment where differing technical and business perspectives can be heard.

The differences in perspective can actually make collaboration more valuable. If every participant approaches a problem identically, there is little reason to collaborate. Meyer argues that competition and cooperation can coexist when companies trust the process and share a commitment to ethical business practices and industry-wide improvement.
